Roblox Ban Temporarily Deferred as Platform Agrees to New Safety Measures — Digital Pinoys

The potential nationwide ban on the online gaming platform Roblox has been temporarily deferred following a high-level meeting between company representatives and Philippine authorities.

According to an update shared by digital advocacy group Digital Pinoys, Roblox has agreed to implement a comprehensive suite of safety protocols and localized compliance measures to address the government’s concerns regarding online child exploitation. Stricter Verification and Chat Restrictions

Roblox Ban Deferred in PH — Digital Pinoys

To curb the risks of grooming and predatory behavior, the platform will overhaul its communication systems. Under the new agreement, chat features will be disabled by default for users. To access the chat functionality, users must undergo age verification using facial recognition technology.

Furthermore, Roblox users will be subject to periodic re-verification checks to ensure the continued accuracy of their identity and age. To strengthen this protocol in the future, Roblox has agreed to explore integration with the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys), aligning with the government’s demand for verification tied to a national database.

Behavioral Monitoring and Content Controls

The agreed-upon safety measures also introduce strict interaction barriers and automated monitoring:

  • Age-Based Restrictions: The platform will implement controls that restrict users from interacting with individuals from significantly different age groups.
  • Behavioral Monitoring: Roblox will actively monitor gameplay and chat behavior to detect “age-inconsistent activity,” allowing the system to flag potential predators misrepresenting their age.
  • Enhanced Moderation: The platform will enforce stricter moderation safeguards to filter and monitor the content accessible to minors.
  • Developer Content Review: Games and experiences created by developers will now undergo a formal review mechanism to ensure age-appropriateness and overall safety before being accessible to players.

Local Accountability and Law Enforcement

Addressing the government’s demands for direct accountability and rapid response, Roblox committed to appointing a Philippine-based representative within the year.

Additionally, Roblox and the Philippine government will establish a formal law enforcement framework. This will create standardized procedures for local authorities to investigate cybercrimes and track digital predators operating within the platform.
