To mark the 15th anniversary of the first real-world Bitcoin transaction this year, multiple web3 communities from CryptoPH are gearing up to host their own commemorative events.
On May 22, 2010, Laszlo Hanyecz, a Florida, U.S.-based programmer and early Bitcoin contributor, made history by completing the first known real-world $BTC transaction. He offered 10,000 $BTC on the Bitcointalk.org forum in exchange for two large pizzas.
The transaction was fulfilled by 19-year-old Jeremy Sturdivant (aka 4Jercos”), who purchased two Papa John’s pizzas for $25 and had them delivered to Hanyecz’s home. In return, Hanyecz transferred the 10,000 BTC to Sturdivant—making it the first documented exchange of Bitcoin for a tangible good.
Although the pizzas were not directly purchased with BTC from a business, this peer-to-peer deal has since become a milestone in crypto history. The value of the 10,000 BTC would be worth billions today, giving rise to Bitcoin Pizza Day, commemorated every May 22 to mark Bitcoin’s evolution from an obscure digital asset to a global financial force.
Crypto commerce platform CryptoBilis, in partnership with hardware wallet provider Tangem, will host the event from 3:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight.
The firm noted that after drawing over 500 attendees last year, this year’s celebration aims to elevate the experience with a bigger venue and a more immersive atmosphere.
